Somewhere around my birthday in November of 2004, I had what turned out to be the last substantive conversation I would ever have with my father - we argued, about whether I should help him fund the con woman who was busy taking him for all he had. When I refused to send him the $30,000 she was apparently asking for, he was quietly sullen for a bit. Then, after a moment, he asked, with a slight lilt in his voice, "So how'd you like the election?"

The nasty triumphalism of that question, and the irrational anger that fed it, became for me a symbol of everything that had gone somehow haywire, in my country and in my life. My mother's death a month later, and my father's soon after, cemented a sense of despair that was so pervasive, so encompassing that it was no longer even noticeable: it was simply the way life was. And the state of the world around me repeatedly confirmed that conclusion.

I'm writing this because of late I've begun to feel the miasma lifting, if ever so slightly, to find myself believing that while the world is a very complicated and difficult place, despair is perhaps not the only and inevitable response.

No one could be more surprised about this than I am. Yes, Mr. Obama, apparently we can.

Paul Krugman:

Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.

What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer “therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”

Four years ago it seemed as if the monsters would dominate American politics for a long time to come. But for now, at least, they’ve been banished to the wilderness.

For now.

Religions and their believers are free to define marriage as they please; they are free to consider homosexuality a sin. But they are not free to impose their definitions of morality on the state. Proposition 8 proponents know this, which is why they have misdirected the debate with highly colored illusions about homosexuals trying to take away the rights of religious Californians. Since May, when the state Supreme Court overturned a proposed ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional, more than 16,000 devoted gay and lesbian couples have celebrated the creation of stable, loving households, of equal legal stature with other households. Their happiness in no way diminishes the rights or happiness of others.

A little background: some primary school kids went on a field trip to see their teacher, who is a lesbian, get married. The field trip required permission slips, not everyone chose to let their kids go. Anyway, the story got into the news, and now Yes on 8 (It's for the *children*) is using footage of these kids in videos designed to raise money for their cause. Except that no one asked the parents of the kids. Here's what they say:

Apparently, it's not just the West any more:

Palin's position on the bridge that would have linked Ketchikan to Gravina Island is one example of a candidate staying on message even when that message has been publicly discredited. Palin has continued to say she opposed a project she once campaigned for -- then killed later, only after support for it had collapsed in Congress.

As the presidential campaign moves into a final, heated stretch, untrue accusations and rumors have started to swirl at a pace so quick that they become regarded as fact before they can be disproved. A number of fabrications about Palin's policies and personal life, for instance, have circulated on the Internet since she joined the Republican ticket.

Palin and John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee, have been more aggressive in recent days in repeating what their opponents say are outright lies. Almost every day, for instance, McCain says rival Barack Obama would raise everyone's taxes, even though the Democrat's tax plan exempts families that earn less than $250,000.

Fed up, the Obama campaign broke a taboo on Monday and used the "L-word" of politics to say that the McCain campaign was lying about the Bridge to Nowhere.

John Feehery, a Republican strategist, said the campaign is entering a stage in which skirmishes over the facts are less important than the dominant themes that are forming voters' opinions of the candidates.

"The more the New York Times and The Washington Post go after Sarah Palin, the better off she is, because there's a bigger truth out there and the bigger truths are she's new, she's popular in Alaska and she is an insurgent," Feehery said. "As long as those are out there, these little facts don't really matter."

Please tell me we can't be this stupid. Please.
